Gardenia jasminoides(gardenia/cape jasmine), is an evergreen flowering plant of the coffee family Rubiaceae. The fruit of Gardenia jasminoides is used within traditional Chinese medicine to “drain fire” and treat certain febrile conditions, i.e. have an anti-inflammatory and antipyretic effect. The iridoids genipin and geniposidic acid can be found in the fruit of Gardenia. Crocetin, a chemical compound, can also be obtained from the fruit of gardenia which is used as a yellow dye.
