Lipoate is the conjugate base of lipoic acid, and the most evalent form of LA under physiological conditions. Only the (R)-(+)-enantiomer (RLA) exists in nature and is essential for aerobic metabolism because RLA is an essential cofactor of many enzyme complexes.
